2026 Whiz Bang Juror - Rita Kirsch Dungey
Rita Kirsch Dungey is a full-time visual artist with a studio practice in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District.
Although she was drawn to art from an early age, Rita's professional path initially led her to the medical and social sciences. After college, she worked in a medical research laboratory at the University of Minnesota before returning to earn a Master of Social Work degree. She went on to build a career in clinical social work, supporting children and families in healthcare settings. Along the way, she also became a licensed psychologist, certified yoga instructor, and Reiki practitioner. Sixteen years ago, an unexpected opportunity opened the door to a new chapter, allowing her to pursue her lifelong dream of studying and creating art full-time.
At the heart of Rita's work is a spirit of exploration and discovery. Influenced by the Abstract Expressionists, she is drawn to their emphasis on personal vision, intuition, and freedom from convention. Her creative process embraces experimentation, spontaneity, and the energetic flow of materials. Through non-representational paintings and abstract mixed-media works, she combines bold forms, expressive gestures, rich color, and layered textures to create vibrant, dynamic compositions.
Rita's process balances intention with chance, allowing unexpected interactions and discoveries to emerge. By responding intuitively to what unfolds, she invites seemingly unrelated elements to connect and evolve. Trust, courage, rhythm, and openness are essential aspects of her practice, bringing vitality and authenticity to each piece.
Her background in healthcare, healing, and service continues to inform her artistic vision. Rita creates work that seeks to generate a sense of positive energy and connection, offering viewers moments of joy, exploration, and reflection. Her paintings invite a pause from everyday life and an opportunity to engage more deeply with the present moment.
Rita's work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, including in Japan, and is represented in numerous corporate and private collections.
